Day 1

Eger Castle

Everybody has seen or at least read about Eger Castle, but it will undoubtedly leave you in awe after each visit. Standing by the castle wall, you can enjoy a perfect 360° panoramic view of the city, making it a must-try spot for taking photos. The alleys leading up to the castle also evoke a medieval atmosphere.

Eger Cathedral

As one of the city’s most characteristic buildings, Eger Cathedral dominates the view of the city centre. This spectacular monument is sure to catch your eye. Take a 90° turn while standing on its stairs and you’ll find yourself facing the similarly breathtaking entrance of the Lyceum.

Archbishop’s Palace and Visitor Centre

The well-known phrase, “Eger, the town of priests” remains true today. The Baroque city functions as an archbishopric, with an exhibition that offers insights into the world of bishops and archbishops. Take a look at the decoration of the Bird Hall wall, where the bird figures appeared from under 30 layers of paint and mortar. Worth a visit!

Day 2

Sightseeing in Eger on the train on wheels

You can choose the comfortable way to get to Szépasszonyvölgy by opting for Dottika, the open-air train on wheels with space for 36 people, transporting you from Eger city centre, from the corner of the Érsekkert park, if you don’t feel like walking or driving. It is not a long distance to walk, but by riding Dottika you have the chance to have a pleasant look around on the way.

Eger Thermal Bath

The Turks planted the seeds of bathing culture in Eger, and it has been flourishing ever since. One of the most charming baths in Hungary. Don’t miss out on the hydrojet showers.

Day 3

Bath and the salt hills in Egerszalók

The nearest you can bump into similar travertine formations is in Pamukkale, Turkey or in the Yellowstone National Park in the US. Previously this was the scene of secret night baths. Now, however a prestigious hotel providing high-quality services completes this unique experience.

Szépasszonyvölgy (Valley of the Beautiful Women)

Do you fancy a lighter afternoon following a tiring day of sightseeing in Eger? The wine cellars, taverns, green environment and the view of the valley’s vineyards provide the ideal ambiance to top it all off and help you relax and enjoy your food and drinks.

During your visit

Wine

Egri Bikavér, the most famous wine from Eger is known by each and every Hungarian. A deep-coloured, full-bodied red wine. According to the legend, the Ottoman army that besieged Eger in 1552 believed that the heroes of the city gained their extraordinary strengths from drinking bulls’ blood, which is reflected in the name of the wine.

Gastronomy

Trout undoubtedly feel at home in the crystal-clear waters fed by the mountain streams near Szilvásvárad and Lillafüred. You can try the golden brown fish straight from the local smokehouse or ask for a takeaway as well, making it the perfect gastro gift.
