Day 1

Eger Castle

Everybody has seen or at least read about Eger Castle, but it will undoubtedly leave you in awe after each visit. Standing by the castle wall, you can enjoy a perfect 360° panoramic view of the city, making it a must-try spot for taking photos. The alleys leading up to the castle also evoke a medieval atmosphere.

Minaret

If you managed to escape the temptation of the terraces of the Kis-Dobó tér, head to the most Eastern minaret of the former Ottoman Empire and its spiral staircase of 97 steps. If you keep your eyes open, you may even stumble on the Ottoman-styled café called Egri Pasa Sátra.

Day 2

Kékestető & the TV tower

A height of 1,014 metres paired with a 196-metre lookout tower. This is the highest point of Hungary. During the winter, you can enjoy ski slopes, and from spring till autumn breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the view of the wonderful landscape. What else could you need? Go and see for yourself.

Oxygen Adrenalin Park

For those who enjoy active leisure time, the park provides a wide range of opportunities over a huge area. Quad-biking, bobsledding, a chairlift, suspension bridge, climbing wall and adrenaline-pumping swings all await visitors, but you can also find a place to quench your thirst, have a coffee at the café if you’re a caffeine addict or eat something at the restaurant or at the picnic spot if you’re hungry.

Day 3

Szalajka valley

Let yourself be surrounded by nature. This is the most magnificent part of Szilvásvárad, an ideal hiking location and one of the most fascinating hiking trails in the Bükk Mountains. Its spectacular feature is the Veil Waterfall, with the perfect picnic spot called Gloriette Glade. Take the time to climb up the steep path to the Istállós-kő cave.

Szilvásvárad Narrow-gauge Railway

Taking the narrow-gauge railway in the Szalajka valley, you can go on a romantic ride in the green forest. Leaving from the entrance of the valley, it follows a romantic track among the trees and rocks. It is recommended that you walk in at least one direction to make sure you see everything.

Day 4

Diósgyőr Castle

One of the most fascinating castles of Hungary is situated 8 kilometres from Miskolc city centre, surrounded by the Bükk Mountains. It is characterised by exhibitions, knights’ tournaments, guided tours in costume, workshops and firearms exhibitions and is surrounded by historical authenticity and atmosphere. If you request it, you will be welcomed by a cannon shot on arrival

Miskolctapolca Cave Baths

A bath house that is unique even by European standards, where you can enjoy the pleasant flow of thermal water in a naturally-shaped environment. It will surely be a unique experience to listen to the sound of the babbling water amplified by the limestone rocks. Enjoy the moment.

Day 5

Lillafüred Sports and Adventure Park

The adventure park is also worth a visit, where a chairlift, Segways, a zipline, go-karts, an escape room, electric scooters and monster bike tracks await. If you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone, try the freefall machine

Lillafüred Narrow-gauge Railway

This is one of the most splendid narrow-gauge railway tracks in Hungary. It crosses viaducts, tunnels and steep mountain tracks. Leaving from Diósgyőr, it passes by the Hunguest Hotel Palota Lillafüred and finally arrives in the valley of the Garadna stream.

During your visit

Wine

Egri Csillag is a characteristic white wine from the Eger region. Its history dates back to Ottoman times. The lights of the watchmen’s booths on the vineyard hillside looked like stars from the city. This is reflected in the name of the wine, as the Hungarian word Csillag means star. These lighted booths marked the one-time trade route where wine was transported as well. The light provided guidance, as Egri Csillag does among wines.

Gastronomy

Palóc soup is one of the most popular dishes in Hungarian cuisine and of Hungarian flavours. A true classic, loved by everyone. It is prepared with meat, green beans and potato, enriched with sour cream. Definitely worth a try!
